Puerto Chale
Puerto Chale
4”x6” Acrylic on handmade cotton rag paper
A couple hours up the coast of the Baja from La Paz is the small port of a fishing community, Puerto Chale. For a short window of time the gray whales that migrate from arctic waters are in a bay there where they birth their young and remain until their calves grow strong enough to head back to the open sea. When we went, there ‘weren’t very many, only about 100’, down from the 300 that had previously been there. Gray whales are very social creatures. They swam along our boats, stuck their noses out of the water to greet us, blew into the air and splashed their tails, all to my toddler’s (and my!) immense delight. It’s hard to say if we were watching them or they were watching us. I’ve never felt so small as having these enormous creatures surround our boat, and just over our shoulder see this view of the open water of the Pacific, knowing that soon they will return to that big abyss. But for that brief moment we all moved about in those same safe waters.
Available in a 5x7” white glass floater frame to highlight the raw edges of the paper.
