About
For the previous ten years Rebecca has predominantly been living abroad teaching Visual Arts and English language and literature, from an orphanage and drug rehabilitation center for children and youth in northern Mexico to a private school in Nyon, Switzerland. In the summer of 2017 she returned to Minnesota where she is now able to dedicate more time to her personal art.
Much of Rebecca’s work is heavily influenced from her years living abroad, from working in impoverished communities in Mexico and the effects of drug violence on daily life, to the challenges and beauty of navigating life in Switzerland, and her recent return to the United States. Her marriage to a Mexican national, experiencing the challenges of going through immigration in three different countries and the realities of being an international and racial couple has not only opened her eyes to her own privilege but also the difficulties that most minorities face. Her series ‘Nuestro Mundito’ seeks to explore and express some of these themes that she herself is navigating in daily life.
As Rebecca’s landscapes and concepts of ‘home’ have continued to change, so has her artwork. Her latest series represents snapshots from home, mostly glimpses from runs through the local woods and lakes near her house in Minnesota. These moments of solitude in nature are rare; they bring moments of peace, tranquility and opportunity for reflection, juxtaposed with physical exhaustion and adrenaline. These paintings are her attempt to capture the beauty and emotion of each ‘View from Home’.
After living in various countries and contexts, she and her family have decided to take the good and leave the bad...viviendo Nuestro Mundito.
